Artist Statement

The inherent beauty that surrounds us all is often overlooked or forgotten. Only in brief moments of reflection or inspiration is it seen in its awe-inspiring complexity.

I began building as a young child and never stopped. Having grown up playing in the woods of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and having sought always to live near to nature, I have turned my early proclivity for the outdoors into a bountiful source of inspiration in my artistic vision.

Through the complex, liquid beauty of glass, I seek to retain nature’s simplicity and its grandeur. My pieces transform natural elements—ice, water, seed pods, plant roots, the late afternoon light cascading through water or limning a tree branch, the morning sun’s rays touching the blossoms of a tree—into pieces that not only capture these moments of transcendence but also transfigure their vitality.

Throughout life, I have observed humans build and create for many reasons; although most often such creation arises out of necessity, to gain wealth, status, or ego, I create and build as an intellectual outlet, an exploration of intrigue.

I see creativity as intelligence exploring and having fun. Following this path for me is a chance to gain understanding of our literal world, as well as a means of grasping where we all fit into it. This learning is the most exciting part of life, and it propels me to the next idea or project.

What most captivates me is the infinite complexity of our natural surroundings—the seasonal rebirth of plants, the ever-changing states of the elements we survive and survive on.

My studio looks out over the gorgeous vistas of the Finger Lakes region of New York.  In deep winter, snow and ice blanket my world and glitter in glassy splendor; summer’s heights transform my property into a lush, green sweep of fertile growth, teeming with life; autumn’s pageantry swirls in dramatic color.

These seasonal spectacles surround my workshop and further inspire my experimentation. As I work, ideas and elements grow into art.

Through such inspiration, the molten glass’s metamorphoses both capture and create, preserve and beget a moment, a place, a fragment of nature or an idea—and the magic remains.
